Ticks don’t smell in the conventional sense. Instead, they measure molecules in the air using a sophisticated sensory structure called the Haller organ. By waving their front legs in the air, they can detect and analyze molecules to determine if they are harmful or belong to a potential host with incredible precision.

When a tick bites its host, precision is key. Over thousands of years, ticks have evolved mouthparts equipped with a variety of receptors to avoid fatal mistakes.
These mouthparts don’t just cut and suck; they taste, analyze, sense, feel, hook, and cement themselves in place to ensure a secure attachment. This sensory system is a marvel of natural evolution.

Each tick leg is equipped with sensors and grippers to analyze the environment. As the host approaches, ticks sense molecules in the air and vibrations in the ground from up to 10 meters away.
When they make contact, they have just milliseconds to decide whether to hold on or let go, analyzing factors like viscosity, temperature, and blood composition. One wrong decision can be fatal for the tick.
Distance
Perhaps the most astonishing ability of ticks is their capacity to sense and react to hosts from a distance. Understanding this ability has allowed us to develop a repellent that keeps ticks at least one meter away without physical contact.
